Edward Julius
Berwind was one of the largest individual owners of coal properties in the
United States. In 1865, he was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy at
Annapolis by President Lincoln. During the administration of President
Grant, he served as a naval aide to the White House.
Mr. Berwind was one the first
millionaires to build a mansion in Newport, R.I. and his estate was valued
at $31 million when he died in 1936.
