The
Market Diner is a DeRaffele from 1964. At one time, there were
approximately eight Market Diners in New York City, owned by the same
family. This was the last one to open. It was about to close in January
2004 but was granted another 3-year lease. The family that ran the Market
Diners was related to the family that ran the Munson Diners described
above.
The Market Diner features a
wonderful zig-zag roofline, a (mostly intact) huge sign and vintage
interior. For a couple other small-scale examples of DeRaffele 1960s
zig-zag roofs, see Clinton's
Diner (Queens, NY) and the Silver
Star Diner (Allentown, PA). For more about the Market Diner, see these
