|
The
actress and comedienne, Gertrude Lawrence, moved into the attractive
building known at Rockefeller Apartments at 17 West 54th Street between
5th and 6th Avenues when it first opened in 1936. Her apartment
looked out on the garden of the Museum of Modern Art. Lawrence gave
some of her most memorable stage performances during her years here.
She played the role of the governess in the original production of The
King and I, which opened in 1951. She died while she was living
here in September, 1952 at the age of 52. |
